Work 5: Robert Irwin’s NIAGARA, 2012
Robert Irwin—who, like Ed Moses, is considered part of the Cool School—uses light to create conceptual and abstract works of art. NIAGARA, one of the newest works to be debuted at the Albright-Knox, was commissioned by the museum and designed specifically for its 1962 Knox Building. Simple, yet elegant, the work’s fluorescent tubes are enhanced with colored gels that radiate hues of purple, blue, white, and gray light and shadows in the museum space, intentionally evoking the colors of Niagara Falls.
You only have two more days to view DECADE in its entirety before the exhibition closes on Sunday, January 6. Thankfully, Irwin’s NIAGARA will be on view for a while longer.
