Whitney Kehl:Erwin Wurm’s Jakob/Big Psycho VII, 2010I find Jakob/Big Psycho VII inspirational because it is so simple is design, yet it leaves so many questions unanswered. How did this person get into a sweater that way, and how on earth is he going to get out? What kind of day or lifestyle is he having that has led him into such a tricky mess? And is he feeling panicked, frustrated, maybe even defeated? Even though he’s the “psycho,” wondering what the answers to these questions might be could drive anybody insane. And, if not, at least it has intriguing shape and enamoring colors. I personally like to think that Jakob is carefully evaluating his situation and trying to figure out how to best solve the predicament without freaking out and making things worse. He may feel trapped, but there’s an endpoint for everyone when you just can’t struggle anymore and have to find a way to progress onward.
