A Halloween Mini-Series: Deadly Enlightenment
This year we’re celebrating Halloween by featuring works in our Collection that remind us of classic horror films.
As the leader of the Japanese avant-garde movement Gutai, Jirō Yoshihara was interested in the beauty behind decay and death. During his later years, Yoshihara began concentrating solely on circles reminiscent of the “satori,” the enlightenment of Zen. His painting To Martha’s Memory is a satori. Yoshihara painted the black background, leaving the ring in the center white, the color of the canvas. The almost glowing quality of the circle reminds us of the electronic glow of the circular shape on the videotape in The Ring.
