Bill Viola’s The Messenger, 1996
The Messenger by Bill Viola is a sound and video instillation that creates a trance-like atmosphere. The man in this video appears to stay underwater longer than is possible. This distortion of time demands a sustained attention from the viewer and allows the viewer to meditate without a great pressure to decode. When I first saw this installation I was drawn to the atmosphere it created. The beauty of this artwork is that even in a room full of people, this piece still feels intimate.
The Future Curators program is part of AK Teens, which is presented by First Niagara.
