Several weeks ago, we brought you a sneak peek at one of the works-in-progress designed for the Gallery’s outdoor campus—Jason Middlebrook’s Under Life. Since then, Middlebrook and an assistant have completely coated Under Life’s steel frame with foam, which they are now whittling down to achieve the perfect root-like profile. As reference, the artist brought along the very real and comparatively diminutive tree stump that has served as a guide for Under Life since its inception. When the carving is complete, the whole sculpture will be covered in fiberglass and then disarticulated into more manageable pieces for transport to the artist’s studio.
Next steps: tiles. Lots and lots of little tiles. Be sure to follow us for updates as this exciting project unfolds.
